Robots vs. Simians: Turnabout

It’s only a matter of time before either the monkeys or the robots take over the world. But who will be first? Our power meter tracks their progress and lets you know who to keep your eyes on.

February 24, 2011 – Turnabout

Instead of waiting for machines or monkeys to take over the world, what if we beat them to it . . . by becoming one of them? In other words, what if we could become robots ourselves?

It’s now possible thanks to VGo. According to the official website, “VGo’s remotely-driven mobility enables you to see, hear, talk and move around as if you were there.” It’s a two-way audio/video device that takes your place when you can’t (or don’t want to) be somewhere.

Basically, it’s a robot version of you.

Imagine the possibilities. If you have one, you never have to go to the office again. Drop off your VGo, maybe put your favorite hat on it, and it’s as if you’re really there. Or how about the reverse? Your co-worker sends his or her VGo to your office. The practical jokes will keep you busy for weeks. (Start off with a “Kick me” sign taped to its back.)

While its creator touts advantages in manufacturing, education, and healthcare industries, we’ve got better ideas. How about dating? Your VGo, her VGo, doing everything but getting to second base, while you sit home and play Gears of War 3. Weddings? Send your VGo. Family reunions? Nothing beats a VGo.

I’m not sure if becoming a robot sounds appealing (how would you pick your nose?), but it’s certainly better than turning yourself into a monkey (and picking someone else’s nose). Perhaps we could put a gorilla costume on VGo and accomplish both goals at the same time.

You can watch VGo in action here:

Our verdict? This week, the advantage lies with us humans. You can breathe easy for at least another week.
